Switchboard Upgrades Sydney

Old fuse board to modern, RCD-protected switchboard — safer, compliant, ready for new loads.

The switchboard is where every circuit in your building starts — and in thousands of older Sydney homes and shops, it's still a ceramic-fuse relic with no safety switches, asbestos panels and no spare ways for modern loads. A switchboard upgrade replaces it with a modern board: RCD protection on circuits, proper labelling, and room for what's coming next.

Upgrades are also the hidden line item in many other projects — ducted air conditioning, commercial kitchen equipment, three-phase machinery and EV chargers all routinely need board work first. Because FRIZAIR installs those systems too, we quote the board and the load honestly as one picture, not as a surprise after you've committed.

What we cover

Full board replacement

Out with fuses and aging breakers; in with a modern board, RCD protection and clear circuit labelling.

Safety switch (RCD) protection

RCDs across circuits — required on new work and the single biggest electrical safety improvement a building can get.

Asbestos panel handling

Older boards on asbestos backing panels handled and disposed of safely under the proper procedures.

Capacity for new loads

Spare ways and capacity assessment for aircon, EV charging, kitchen equipment or machinery — sized once, properly.

Defect rectification

Defect notices from inspectors or insurers rectified and certified, with the paperwork to close them out.

Indicative pricing

Honest guide ranges — something almost nobody in this industry publishes. Every job is quoted up-front before work starts.

Residential switchboard upgrade $1,200–$3,500
With asbestos panel removal / relocation add $500–$1,500
Commercial / three-phase boards quoted on site

Indicative Sydney ranges — final price depends on circuit count and board condition. Fixed quote before work starts.

One team, three trades

Most jobs touch more than one trade — a cool room needs a circuit, an aircon needs a switchboard. We hold the licences for all of it.

Frequently asked questions

How do I know if my switchboard needs upgrading?

Ceramic fuses, no safety switches, a black backing panel (often asbestos), frequent tripping, or any buzzing and heat are the classic signs. If you are adding ducted aircon, an EV charger or commercial equipment, have the board assessed before you buy — not after.

What does a switchboard upgrade cost in Sydney?

Most residential upgrades land between $1,200 and $3,500 depending on circuits and condition, with asbestos panel removal adding to that. Commercial boards are quoted on site. Ours are fixed quotes — the number you accept is the number you pay.

Will the power be off all day?

Plan for several hours without power on changeover day — most residential upgrades are done within the day. For businesses we schedule around trading, including after-hours changeovers so you never trade powerless.

Are safety switches legally required?

All new and altered circuits in NSW require RCD protection, and a board this old usually predates them entirely. Beyond compliance: an RCD is the device that stops a faulty appliance becoming a fatality. It is the least optional upgrade in the building.
